Today's weird holiday is fourfold: National Sports Wives Day (tell Tiger's wife), National Visit a Shut-in Day (tell Tiger), National Be Satisfied Staying Single Day (again with his wife) and National White Shirt Day (no idea who benefits from that one.)

Today's word is avarice, which means greed.

Gifted English II: Review the requirements for the JC focus paper, which I would like submitted by Friday but which I will take by Tuesday. See how nice I can be? And in class--Othello, Othello, Othello, and go over the content vocabulary preparatory to tomorrow's exciting little quizlet.

APees: Finish the TP-CASTT analysis of "West Wind" and take a stickynote quiz on said poem; then begin transition into Keats. I love Keats. Almost as much as Coleridge. And that is saying something.

Welcome to February!!!

Gifted English II: The Julius Caesar test has been postponed until Thursday, but we are reviewing in class today regardless. We are also going to begin the focus paper assignment--many of you may opt to revise the timed writing from last week into the final draft. Also, we are going to REMIND YOU about the memorization assignment due later this week.

AP Literature: Analysis of "Rime" and "Kubla Khan" with emphasis on the conflict between Wordsworth and Coleridge. We need to talk about what Wordsworth deemed faulty characterization and overwrought imagery, and then look at the allusions, imagery, and metaphors in both works.

Today's weird holiday is Free Thinkers Day and Fun at Work Day. Since I try to think freely and have fun at work every day, I'm not sure what to do differently, per se, today, but I might wear a funky hat.

Today's word is fungible, which means easily broken.

We'll leave Ireland alone for today. I can't pronounce anything anyway and will depend on the kindness of strangers, as I usually do when I travel.

Gifted English II: JC vocabulary quiz; plan for Lupercalia; review for JC unit test early next week.

APees: "Rime" journal entry/reaction paper; Iron Maiden Air Guitar Day with their version of "Rime." AWESOME.

NOTE: The first poetry reading will be after school today from 2:30-4:30 in room 313; there will be snacks. This is for AP students but, really, if you are completely fascinated by poetry come along. Mrs. Covert and I are co-hosting, and we are analyzing four poems of varying intensity this week. If this one goes well, we will host them every three-four weeks.

Gifted English II: Author of the Day is Samuel Taylor Coleridge, my favorite Romantic poet. And I have a pop-up book to share with you that features his poem "Kubla Khan" as illustrated by Nick Bantock--another Author of the Day in the next few weeks or so. Vocabulary quiz follows, with analysis of "Billy."

APees: Oedipus Rex Test. And there will be much rejoicing. Help with ORex focus papers if you are so inclined.

Today is National Ask Your Cat a Question Day.  While some of my classes celebrated National Hug Day yesterday in school, I think today's revelries would be better served in the privacy of your own home.  Ask your cat a question!  He or she probably won't answer.

Also--we are going to have a visitor today, a gentleman who wants to become a teacher.  Please be nice.  (I'm really only talking to a handful of you--the handful who probably don't check an assignment blog anyway. . .)

Gifted English II:  Julius Caesar Scavenger Hunt!  Bring your copy of the play and I will provide the fun.  And if we finish in time, we can go over the upcoming Julius Caesar Focus Paper assignment.  Oh, yeah.   Good times!!!

AP Literature and Composition:  "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" with the graphic organizer I gave you yesterday; if time, a transition to Classic Rock Day with Iron Maiden's classic interpretation of the poem.  Also--Shelley Focus Paper Assignment.  No rest for the wicked.
