AP Lit: Focus papers due today. Watching a sequence from Frankenstein today, and passing out copies of Jane Eyre for your reading pleasure. Oh, and a reading journal assignment, since Spring Break is coming soon and I don't want your brains to get too mushy. :-)

Gifted IV: Restoration Study Guide with the Elements of Lit book. You will really like Samuel Pepys. Fun guy.

Gifted II: Elements of Style, Rules 12 and 13. Author of the Day: Fyodor Dostoevsky. Author of the Day project assigned. Some of you will have third quarter; some of you fourth. Hopefully, we can finish Othello today or tomorrow. . .

REMINDER: If you have a focus paper due, and need until 3 to submit it, you may turn it in to the front office and they will get it to me. I will be in my classroom until 2:30 but then I have to leave campus due to later rambunctiousness that evening.

Monday, February 28--the last day of February!

AP Lit: We will be working on Frankenstein again, and viewing part of the film. It's kind of disgusting, so bring a motion sickness bag if you need one. Just warning you. Focus papers are due tomorrow, and if we have time we will introduce Jane Eyre. Or not.

Gifted IV: Focus paper assignment for R and G Are Dead goes out today; we will be moving back into the textbook tomorrow so you need to bring yours each day. We are moving into the Restoration Era, 1660-1798. Yay.

Gifted II: Elements of Style, Rule #11. Author of the Day: Jeffrey Eugenides. Othello, Act IV, scene ii. (Don't you just love this play?)

REMINDER: Meeting for all students going to Rome for Holy Week will be tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. Russ will have Euros if you need them and can answer any and all questions you might have.

REMINDER REMINDER: We are ushering again this week! Check the sign-up list.

Writing Center open before school. See previous post; we still need help in the mornings.

AP Lit: Give back Romanticism Unit Tests; discuss Frankenstein. I have a short scene I'd like to show you from Kenneth Branagh's film version, but it's fairly disgusting. Maybe we'll take a vote.

Gifted IV: Give back R and G quizzes; finish reading Act III, watch more Tim Roth and Gary Oldman gallivanting about in existential humor.

Gifted II: I love you, and TSI is OVER. Whew. Elements of Style quiz; resumption of Othello, distribution of Othello Focus Paper.

Thursday, February 24, 2005

Writing Center will be open before school--Mrs. Covert's students are bringing in 6-page research papers, and any of you who need help with the Shelley paper might want to come by. I would really appreciate help from the Usual Suspects, so if you get to school early, come to 315. (Unless you have Math Club.)

AP Lit: Romanticism Unit Test. You will need a pencil for the multiple-choice passages. This test will take some of you all period, so bring Frankenstein for silent reading afterward in the event that you finish early.

Gifted IV: R and G quiz; resume screening of film.

Gifted II: TSI part II, the last time EVER IN YOUR LIFE; Othello. We will review the first ten rules of The Elements of Style.

Make-up quizzes after school in 313 if you need them.

Wednesday, February 23, 2005

I will be there early to collect AP Lit apps--see me if you need any make-up work.

AP Lit: Review for Romanticism Unit Test on Thursday. You technically already have the review sheet--the initial lecture notes--but I have extra copies on hand if you can't locate them tomorrow for the review. BRING A PENCIL THURSDAY.

Gifted IV: We are going to act out four or five more pages of the play, then start the film tomorrow. Fabulousness. Bring popcorn if you want.

Gifted II: TSI/Othello. Please don't argue with me on this; I have NO CHOICE. Consequently, the Elements of Style quiz has been rescheduled to Friday.

I am leaving sixth period, since the Teacher of the Year banquet downtown is right after school--really great scheduling, eh? E-mail me if you have focus paper questions or need insight into the Meaning of Life. The answer is always 42.

Books and Materials

This update is for APees and any interested parties:

I need to order materials for next year. PLEASE check lockers, cars, bedrooms, other places you fling things, and bring back any materials you may have retained that you don't plan to buy.

On a related note, what titles do YOU think we should keep for next year? I am definitely ordering thirty more copies of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, but beyond that I have no immediate plans to change titles. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks, and see you tomorrow! Bring your lit book. . .

Welcome back from a loooong weekend! Grades are updated today so check the bin for graded work and resubmits.

AP Lit: Frankendiscussion. Let's talk ethics.

Gifted IV: Finish performing the Stoppard play.

Gifted II: Please meet in Guidance. We will be registering for next year's classes during both third and fourth periods.

Sean: You will need to go to Guidance during first period; pop by for a pass. How's that FCAT article coming along?

Writing Center is open before school, after school, and during both lunch shifts.

Friday, February 18, 2005

The end of the week, before a nice, long three day weekend!

AP Literature students: Bring Frankenstein with you and a pillow; reading in class. If you have been absent, today is a dandy day to get caught up with Keats. There will probably be a teeny tiny little quiz since I hear from the grapevine that it is Senior Skip Day, which means nothing in my universe.

Gifted English IV students: See above note regarding quiz. More Stoppard and a little writing assignment.

Gifted English II, who has absolutely no pretense of skipping: Othello vocabulary quiz on the ten terms that have been floating about on the board of late. And then more Othello.

Enjoy the long weekend! Planning ahead: Romanticism Unit Test next Thursday or Friday for AP.

Ushers need to meet at the theater at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday in white and black to push small children around.

Thursday, February 17, 2005

The Boone Writing Center will be open before school, after school, and during both lunch shifts in room 315. Writing Center consultants: Please check the sign-in board and be sure all shifts are covered. We may have no one; we may have everyone.

AP Lit, periods 1 and 5: Finish the last of the creative presentations. In the anthology, answer questions for "Grecian Urn" in small groups. Anyone feel like sketching a cool urn?

Gifted English IV, period 2: R and G Are Dead and thought questions.

Gifted English II, periods 3 and 4: Elements of Style, chapter 1, and Othello, Act III. Vocabulary quiz that we were going to do this period we will do Friday instead. Be sure to define these words. Also, we really need to talk about TSI. I'm in a bad spot here and need your help.

Other announcements: I will not be on campus after school, so if you need to see me, come find me before sixth period. Also, you may notice that the desks are in a slightly different formation--closer to the front of the room--oh, goodness, no one can hide. . .

Wednesday, February 16, 2005

Welcome to the new blog! Check back here each school day for updates.

AP Lit, periods 1 and 5: In-class presentations for Romanticism Creative Projects. Bring your lit books tomorrow to go over Keatsian questions for "Ode on a Grecian Urn." Also, if anyone still has their copy of Heart of Darkness, please bring it to class with you so Mrs. Covert can use them next.

Gifted English IV, period 2: We read through most of Act II in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Bring your play with you tomorrow.

Gifted English II, periods 3 and 4: We went through Othello, Act III, scenes i-iii today, with some inventive performances from Denver, Kacie, Paul, Andy, Moriah, Siedah, and others. Thanks! Please bring The Elements of Style with you to class tomorrow for Good Times with Grammar.

LOOKING AHEAD: APees, you will have a Romanticism Review Test coming up soon, and the Focus Paper for Shelley goes out tomorrow. Gifted IIs, you have another paper coming up--this time on Othello. Gifted IVs, a new focus paper assignment--this one connecting Hamlet, Macbeth, and Stoppard--is pending. ALSO--anyone who wants to usher for James and the Giant Peach this Saturday at the Orlando Shakespeare Festival should come see me in room 313 before or after school.

Juniors: AP Lit apps are due as soon as possible. See me in 313 or Covert in P-27. THANKS!
